Town Opens New Merchants Parking Lot in Port Washington
Additional lot will open more prime spaces for shoppers in downtown

North Hempstead, NY– North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Town Clerk Wayne Wink, Receiver of Taxes Charlie Berman, and Councilperson Dina De Giorgio attended a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 18 for a new parking lot for local merchants at the site of the former Shields House property in Port Washington. The dilapidated Shield House was demolished in 2013 to make way for the new 28-space lot located at 1070 Port Washington Boulevard.

Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said, "Providing a pleasurable and convenient shopping experience in our downtowns is of paramount importance to this administration, and having ample parking is key to achieving that. This new lot will free up prime spaces, which we anticipate will improve business for the shops and dining establishments along Main Street.”

“I would like to acknowledge and thank the Port Washington Parking Committee, Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington, the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District for all of their time, efforts and contributions in making this project a reality,” Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio.

This effort was aided by the Port Washington Parking Committee, Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington, and the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce.

“It was a blighted property and now it’s a beautiful functional space that can impact our parking challenges,” said Mindy Germain, Executive Director of Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington. “We’re hoping merchants will participate in this new amenity, and it will free up some on street parking for shoppers.”

“The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce is very pleased that, finally, the merchants have off-street parking for their cars, leaving more parking spaces along Main Street for shoppers. We thank Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio for spearheading this project and responding to the needs of our merchants. We are also grateful to Supervisor Judi Bosworth for her support that made this possible,” Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bobbie Polay said.

"The new parking lot is a nice completion to a project that will help stimulate our business district" said Paul Oleksiw, President, and Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District. Town officials authorized $483,465 in construction for the 13,050 square foot lot, but believe the project, which took four months to complete, will cost in between $455,000 to $465,000.

If you are a local merchant and would like to request an assigned spot, you can visit 15 Vanderventer Avenue and fill out an application. All permit request for parking spots can be made through the Port Washington Parking District. The cost of a parking space in the lot is $750 for one year.

If you have any additional questions, please call (516) 869-6311.

Town to Offer Compostable Leaf Bags At Low Cost of Just $2 for five bags

North Hempstead, NY–Indicating the administration’s commitment to preserving the environment, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board are proud to offer biodegradable paper leaf bags for all residents, available at a low cost of just $2 for five large bags and hold up to 30 gallons of waste.

“We are proud to be offering our residents an environmental friendly way of disposing of their yard waste,” Supervisor Bosworth. “Not only will these biodegradable bags will help reduce the use of plastic bags, but they will also help us contribute to creating a greener environment. This initiative will reduce the amount of garbage we send to landfills by making sure that yard waste is diverted to composting facilities.”

The biodegradable paper bags will be sold at a nominal cost of $2 for a bundle of 5 bags and are intended only for yard waste, specifically grass and leaves. They will be collected curbside on residents’ designated collection day.

“Using compostable paper bags is an important way to save manpower and to reduce plastic contamination of our compost,” Chief Sustainability Officer Erin Reilley said. “Plastic bags must be manually removed from compost piles, and if garbage haulers don’t know that plastic bags left curbside contain leaves, then they end up in a landfill instead of being turned into compost.”

Residents can purchase the bags at the Solid Waste Management Authority at 802 West Shore Rd., Port Washington, the Town’s Aquatic Activity Center at Michael J. Tully Park, 1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park and at the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center, 141 Garden Street, Westbury.

For further information, please call 311 or 516-869-6311.

Town Now Providing Safe Disposal Receptacles for Monofilament Fishing Line

North Hempstead, NY– North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Town Board and the Town’s Bay Constables have announced this week that new signage and designated receptacles have been placed around the Town Dock in Port Washington, reminding fishermen to protect fish and wildlife by discarding of non-biodegradable monofilament fishing line properly. According to the Audubon Society, monofilament fishing line is an amazingly strong substance that gets snagged on many things in the environment. Discarded line can snag and harm people and wildlife and kill fish, turtles, frogs, birds and small mammals.

“Each year our Bay Constables rescue sea birds and other marine life that have become entangled in discarded fishing line,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “When fishing line is left near the water, it is hard for animals to detect and can entangle all sorts of wildlife, leading to a slow and painful death. The signage along Town Dock, along with the handy receptacles will prevent discarded fishing line from harming our wildlife and our water.”

According to Chief Bay Constable Mal Nathan, he has observed birds wrapped in fishing line that became entangled on telephone and light poles, causing their death.

“This material can be dangerous when disposed of in a careless manner and can also be a tripping hazard to people on the dock,” Nathan said.

This program was implemented in conjunction with the Town’s Office of Sustainability. Chief Sustainability Officer Erin Reilley said, “It’s important to manage all of our waste responsibly, but we ask residents to take special care with litter that pose special threats to wildlife.”

"As the water quality in our bays and harbors has continued to improve, more wildlife has returned such as diamondback turtles that were once almost extinct,” said Eric Swenson, Executive Director of the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee. “We cannot afford to lose any of these creatures simply because of improperly discarded fishing line. We therefore thank the Town of North Hempstead for its foresight in this project."

This is one of those times when a simple solution can cure a big problem" said Jennifer Wilson-Pines, Co-President of the North Shore Audubon Society. "Improperly discarded fishing line is a hazard not only in the marine environment, but can be fatally attractive to birds seeking nesting materials. I have had to climb into a tree to cut loose a bird that was hanging from monofilament wound around its leg."

Fishing line can become lodged in bushes or shrubbery, found along shorelines or fishing docks, and even tangled in trees where they ensnare wildlife such as turtles, birds, otters, and frogs.

If you have any questions please call 311 or 516-869-6311.

Town Offers Tips on Holiday Fire Safety

North Hempstead, NY– With the holidays approaching, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board are raising awareness about fire safety this holiday season. They would like residents to be mindful of several tips to keep their families safe during the holidays.

“This time of year is a joyous opportunity to celebrate and gather with family and friends. However, it is important for residents to be aware that fires can result from electrical problems and candles that might be used for holiday decorations,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth.

Here are some tips on how to prevent home fires this holiday season from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Make sure that all artificial trees are flame resistant.
  • Keep natural trees well-watered. Dried out trees are fire hazards; the drier they become, the more susceptible they are to catching fire.
  • Avoid placing lit candles near the tree or decorations.
  • Remove malfunctioning holiday lights from your tree.
  • Keep trees away from a heat source.

North Hempstead Encourages Residents to Recycle Live Christmas Trees, Electronics and Holiday Lights This Season

North Hempstead, NY– This holiday season, Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Town Board, and the Town’s Office of Sustainability, encourage residents to recycle their live Christmas trees, old electronics and unwanted holiday lights. The Town urges all residents to help our environment by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Residents can leave live Christmas trees curbside on normal yard waste collection days for the first two weeks of January. Please remove all decorations, lights and ornaments.

“Recycling your old Christmas tree is a great way to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner,” said Supervisor Bosworth “Since Christmas trees are biodegradable, they can be repurposed into mulch. This saves other trees from being cut down while reducing the space it would take up in a landfill.”

Additionally, Supervisor Bosworth encourages residents to recycle their holiday lights and unwanted electronics. Under New York State law, e-waste may no longer be disposed of curbside but must be brought to one of our drop-off sites (information below). Collected electronic waste is hauled off by the town’s EPA certified e-waste recycler, who disassembles the items, salvages the useable parts, separates out potentially damaging materials, and recycles the balance.

Residents can dispose energy-gulping holiday lights until the end of January, and other unwanted electronics on Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at North Hempstead’s residential drop-off site, located at 999 West Shore Road in Roslyn. E-waste can also be disposed of during the weekdays at North Hempstead’s Solid Waste Management Authority (SWMA), located at 802 West Shore Road in Port Washington, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays.

Town Receives Four State Regional Economic Development Awards Totaling $757K

North Hempstead, NY– North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth is proud to announce that the Town has been named the recipient of four New York State Regional Economic Development Council Initiative awards, totaling $757,950, that will address projects such as the creation of an environmental master plan, a cultural master plan, and several mapping projects. The awards were part of a total of more than $2 billion in economic grants announced this week by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“These grants will enable the Town to address several environmental initiatives that are critically important to the Town’s environmental health, as well as other projects that will improve our infrastructure and enhance our communities,” said Bosworth. “The more than $757,000 in funding will serve as a great economic engine for our Town.”

The state-wide competitive awards were established in 2011, along with the 10 Regional Councils, as part of the Governor’s plan to jumpstart the economy and create jobs. The Regional Councils are intended to empower communities, businesses, and academic leaders, as well as members of the public in each region, to develop strategic plans specifically tailored to their region’s unique strengths and resources in order to create jobs, improve quality of life and grow the economy.

The awards for North Hempstead include:

  • $316,250 for a North Hempstead Storm Water Mapping Project-The Town will conduct a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping on behalf of the Town and 20 villages within the Town’s borders and the village of Sea Cliff. The project will generate a “Surface Water Priority Action Zone” to support policymaking and capital planning and create a GIS attribute layer that identifies and characterizes septic systems to support municipal efforts to inspect septic systems that may be contributing to water quality impairments. The project will address water quality in Little Neck Bay, Manhasset Bay and Hempstead Harbor.

  • $270,000 for a Joint Municipal Asset Mapping Project-The Town will partner with the Village of Port Washington to develop a consolidated GIS mapping program that will digitize roadways, sidewalks, curbs, catch basins, street signs, hydrants, street lighting and trees. The end result will be a central repository for all surface features that can be used as a tool to track location, condition, and age of assets as well as measure asset life cycles, maintenance costs and depreciation.

  • $122,200 for an Environmental Master Plan-The Town will prepare a town-wide environmental master plan, including planning for surface and groundwater protection, habitat (preservation, restoration and enhancement) and climate change strategies. The master plan will also include conceptual designs for an environmental and waterfront recreational area comprised of 83 acres of beach parks with approximately 6,000 feet of shoreline, 200 acres of wetlands and meadow habitat.

  • $49,500 for a North Hempstead Cultural Master Plan-This plan will assist the Town to prioritize arts initiatives, support traditionally underserved talent pools and raise the visibility of local artists to a platform beyond the community level.

In addition, businesses and municipalities within the Town of North Hempstead garnered more than $3.6 million in awards. For a full list of awards log on to https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-more-2-billion-economic-development-resources-awarded-through-upstate.

Town and PWPD Remind Residents to Be Smart & Drive Safely

North Hempstead, NY– The Port Washington Police District (PWPD), in conjunction with the Town of North Hempstead, is actively publicizing a safe driving initiative for the Port Washington peninsula.

Be Smart – Drive Safely has been seen on banners and bumper/window stickers around town for the past year. After a competition, Jo McGinty and Steve Kaplan collaborated to develop the acronym “Be S.M.A.R.T. Safety Matters. Act Responsibly. Tell others”. Kaplan then had bumper/window stickers made which are available at PWPD headquarters to all who want to promote safe driving. In addition, Kaplan began getting commercial sponsors to fund PWPD banners around town and spoke with Town officials who authorized installation of similar banners at Town Dock and other Town facilities to get the message to drivers in our area.

”We are proud to partner with the Port Washington Police District and the local community on this critical safety initiative,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “These signs and notifications around the Town should serve as a reminder to residents of the importance of following all traffic laws, which enables us to continue to enjoy a high quality of life in the Town.”

Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio said, “It is my pleasure to support the PWPD and to reinforce the message of the BE SMART campaign.”

Chief Jim Salerno and The PWPD have instituted various safety initiatives, like driver check points for DWI, safety cross walk instructions and enforcement, and child seat installation assistance. In addition, Pubic Safety forums were scheduled at the PW Library, in our Villages, and organizations around town, all in an effort to make our town and streets safer.

Chief Salerno reminds all motorists to please obey traffic safety laws. Violators will be called to task when they endanger the safety of our residents. There are too many complaints regarding cell phones / texting, speeding, stop signs, parking in dangerous locations and illegal U turn violations. Chief Salerno and the Board of Commissioners continue to work closely with the Town of North Hempstead in helping to make Port Washington safer.

For more information on this initiative, please call 311 or 516-869-6311.

NHTV Debuts New PSA on Water Conservation

North Hempstead, NY– North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth in conjunction with the Town’s Office of Sustainability announced that North Hempstead Television (NHTV) will debut a new public service announcement (PSA) aimed at providing residents tips on conserving water in their everyday lives.

The one-minute PSA discusses the importance of fixing leaky faucets, washing your car at a car wash rather than manually at home, and not overwatering your lawn during hot summer months. The commercial also encourages residents to purchase items such as showerheads and faucets that have the logo of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Watersense program, of which the Town is a partner, in order to cut water use by 20 percent.

“This PSA is critical to our ongoing mission of informing residents that our water supply on Long Island is not endless,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “It is essential that we are all equipped with the knowledge and tools to conserve water in order to ensure that this precious resource is available for future generations.”

The PSA can be viewed on NHTV on Channel 18/63 on Cablevision or Channel 46 on Verizon FIOS. It can also be accessed online at www.mynhtv.com.
